Russia may halt hostilities around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant for power line repairs

The head of the Russian corporation “Rosatom,” Alexey Likhachev, announced that as early as next Friday, October 17, a decision may be made in the Russian Federation to temporarily cease hostilities in the area of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. According to him, this step will allow for repair work on the power lines that supply the plant with electricity from the Ukrainian energy system.

Possibility of repairing energy infrastructure

According to Likhachev, the cessation of hostilities is necessary to restore two damaged power lines. One of these lines is under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, while the other is located in territory controlled by Russia. Restoring the operation of these lines is critically important for the safety and stable functioning of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

The decision remains preliminary

The head of “Rosatom” emphasized that a final decision has not yet been made and that it is of a preliminary nature. He highlighted the complexity of the situation, noting that such a step would require achieving a fair balance between the parties to the conflict.

“This is a very complex decision that requires a fair balance. It is very conditional, very preliminary, and it is possible that such a decision will be implemented as early as tomorrow.”

Thus, the question of halting hostilities around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant remains open and depends on further agreements and the dynamics of the situation in the region.
