Problems of the 14th Brigade: why soldiers are left in dangerous positions for the sake of reporting

The discussion about the situation in the 14th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has sparked widespread resonance due to questions regarding the advisability of holding positions for the sake of command reports. Against the backdrop of information about the implementation of a corps system and better coordination in the army, cases of units being cut off from logistics raise concerns.

Consequences of simulating the defense line

In modern warfare conditions, leaving soldiers in positions where supplies cannot be delivered even with the help of drones is not only ineffective but also leads to the loss of personnel and resources. Instead of actual holding of the front line, such actions often turn into a simulation for reporting purposes. As a result, in the event of a breach of defense, the situation has to be corrected through emergency measures involving additional forces, resulting in significant losses both in personnel and equipment.

“The fact that in modern warfare, fighters in a position cut off from logistics hold little (except for positions in reports) — no one cares there. And if you can’t even provide logistics there with drones — then people need to be taken away from here.”

The importance of rotation and support for infantry

Infantry is one of the most valuable resources in war, so providing it with reliable communication, drones, electronic warfare means, and regular rotation should be a priority. Without these conditions, even the best position will not be effective. The situation with the 14th Brigade has drawn attention to the need for changes in command approaches, as demotivation of personnel can negatively impact future mobilization.

At the same time, it is noted that in other units, commanders mostly care for their subordinates. In brigades with quality coordination and modern drone capabilities, such cases are exceptions rather than the rule. However, it is important that such situations become unacceptable in this war.
