EU Plans to Completely Halt Imports of Russian Oil by 2027

The European Union is actively developing a strategy to completely abandon oil from the Russian Federation, aiming to achieve this goal by the end of 2027. This was announced by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, during a joint press conference with U.S. President Donald Trump.

EU Action Plan to Reduce Energy Dependence on Russia

As noted by the head of the European Commission, the EU has already significantly reduced the supply of Russian oil and gas, but certain volumes of energy resources are still entering the European market. To fully halt imports, the European Commission proposes to impose additional tariffs on oil from the Russian Federation.

“What are we doing now? We are imposing sanctions on those ports that receive liquefied gas from Russia, and we want to implement tariffs on the oil supplies that are still coming to the European Union,” said the President of the European Commission.

In Brussels, it is emphasized that such steps should accelerate the abandonment of Russian energy resources by individual member states, particularly Hungary and Slovakia, which still significantly depend on imports from Russia.

Sanctions and Tariff Increases: Next Steps

In response to a question about the possible timeline for a complete cessation of purchases of Russian oil, Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that the gradual phase-out of imports is already in effect, and new sanctions must be approved by the EU member states. In her post on the social network X, the President of the European Commission stressed that by 2027, “Europe will have permanently turned the page on Russian fossil fuels.”

European Commission spokesperson Olaf Gill clarified during a briefing that the EU is also considering increasing tariffs not only on oil but also on gas from Russia. This proposal must be approved by a qualified majority of the member states of the bloc.
