Expansion of Cultivated Areas and Cultivation Features
This season, nearly 35 hectares have been allocated for peanut cultivation in Kharkiv region, and another 5 hectares in Chernihiv region. According to chief agronomist Hennadiy Malyi, the average yield of this crop this year was approximately one ton per hectare, confirming its adaptability to the climatic conditions of northeastern Ukraine.
“This season required adapting the technology to our conditions. For us, this is not just an experiment, but a practical study of the possibility of industrial peanut cultivation,” says the specialist.
Currently, there is virtually no specialized equipment for peanut processing in the country, so a significant portion of the work must be done manually by farmers. Despite this, farmers plan to expand the areas under this crop, considering the positive results of the current season.
Agricultural Techniques and Global Production Dynamics
Peanuts are usually planted in May. Their fruits form underground, so the plants are hilled up like potatoes. The crop requires intense sunlight for normal development, and its yield largely depends on warm weather conditions.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, global peanut production is expected to reach 52.4 million tons by 2025. China remains the leader among producing countries, providing 19 million tons (36% of the global market). It is followed by India (7.5 million tons or 14%), Nigeria (5.2 million tons or 10%), the United States (3.4 million tons or 6%), and Myanmar (1.8 million tons or 3%).
Given the initial results, Ukrainian producers are already planning further scaling of peanut cultivation, which could positively impact the agricultural sector of the country in the coming years.
