New Export Opportunities for Ukrainian Agricultural Products: The United Kingdom and China

According to experts in the agricultural sector, the United Kingdom, facing a poor blueberry production season in Spain, its key supplier, is changing its supply strategy. Eastern European countries, particularly Ukraine and Poland, are becoming new priorities for importing this berry.

“The situation is interesting: before the season, no one wanted to fix volumes, but now we are actively selling and shifting our focus to Eastern Europe”

This opinion was expressed by one of the Ukrainian traders. Active sales of blueberries are expected to continue from the end of June to mid-August. It is worth noting that Georgia, Zimbabwe, and Ukraine have made it to the top three countries where blueberry exports are showing the highest growth rates.

Moreover, Ukraine has the potential to increase sugar supplies to the Chinese market. Currently, Ukrainian producers are exporting only small volumes of this product to China. However, to boost exports, Ukraine will need to compete with Brazil and countries in South Asia. Thus, the Chinese market could become an important alternative for Ukrainian sugar producers amid import restrictions on this product in the EU, where currently 10% of Ukrainian sugar is exported.
