New Border Rules with Poland: Passport Scanning and Biometrics

Starting from November 3, 2025, new crossing rules will be implemented at the Ukraine-Poland border, which require mandatory passport scanning and collection of biometric data. From now on, all citizens planning to cross the border at the “Yahodyn – Dorohusk” and “Ustyluh – Zosin” checkpoints must register at a self-service terminal or with a border guard on the Polish side.

Features of the New Digital System

The introduction of the digital entry and exit system for the Schengen area entails mandatory passport scanning, photography, and fingerprint collection. However, for children under 12 years old, the fingerprinting procedure is not mandatory. During subsequent trips, biometric data will be checked and matched with the existing information in the Schengen digital system.

“Starting from November 3, 2025, that is, from now on, all travelers crossing the border at the specified checkpoints from the Polish side must undergo initial registration at a self-service terminal or with a border guard officer”.

Possible Delays and Additional Advice

The State Customs Service warns that the implementation of the new system may initially cause delays during control procedures. Citizens are advised to plan their travel time in advance when crossing these checkpoints or to choose alternative routes to avoid queues. A special queue map at the checkpoints will help monitor the situation at the border.

Previously, similar rules were introduced at other border crossings between Ukraine and Poland, including: Krakowiec – Korczowa, Hrushev – Budomezh, Smilnytsia – Korostenko, Shehyni – Medyka, Nyzankovychy – Malchowice. These innovations are part of a Europe-wide digitalization of border control.
