More than 40% of agent AI projects will cease operations by 2027 — Gartner forecast

More than 40% of projects related to agent artificial intelligence will be closed by 2027 due to high costs and insufficient business value. This forecast is included in a report by the analytical company Gartner.

Reasons for the closure of agent AI projects

Experts note that most modern developments in the field of agent AI remain at the experimental level. A significant portion of initiatives positioned as innovative do not provide real autonomy for systems and do not achieve the set business goals. Gartner analyst Anushree Verma explains that companies often present outdated solutions as agent AI that do not actually possess the required characteristics — a phenomenon that has already been termed “agent washing.”

“Most of these initiatives do not demonstrate a return on investment,” she noted.

According to Gartner’s definition, agent AI refers to systems capable of making decisions and performing tasks independently without constant human involvement, approaching full automation. However, analysts point out that among the thousands of declared products, only about 130 truly meet these criteria. The rest are either regular assistants or chatbots, or have limited autonomy functions.

Prospects for the development of agent AI

Despite current challenges, Gartner specialists predict an increase in the influence of agent AI in the coming years. According to their estimates, by 2028, such systems will participate in at least 15% of everyday work decisions — whereas in 2024, this figure was 0%. It is also expected that approximately one-third of corporate software solutions will operate based on agent AI by 2028, compared to less than 1% currently.

Major technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, Salesforce, and Oracle are actively investing in the development of agent AI, pouring billions of dollars into creating innovative solutions to enhance business efficiency and optimize costs.

It was previously reported that the studio Donut Labs raised $7 million in a seed round for the development of a crypto browser with integrated AI agents.
