Ethereum Updates Gas Limit to 60 Million to Enhance Performance

The Ethereum network is preparing for a significant increase in the gas limit, which could reach 60 million units. More than 150,000 validators, accounting for approximately 15% of all network participants, have already expressed their support for this innovation, which, according to GasLimit.Pics, aims to double the data processing capacity in each block.

According to information provided by Ethereum researcher Toni Vorstetter, the new gas limit will significantly enhance the network’s throughput at the L1 level.

“Increasing the gas limit allows each block to process more data, and therefore more transactions.”

This change will not require a hard fork, unlike major protocol updates. Validators will be able to adjust their nodes independently, and the new limit will be automatically implemented if more than 50% of network participants agree to it.

It is worth noting that a recent update called Pectra was conducted on Ethereum. Gas in the Ethereum network is a unit of measurement for the computational effort required to execute transactions and smart contracts. The gas limit for a block regulates the maximum amount of gas that can be used by all transactions within a single block.

The previous increase in the gas limit occurred in February 2025, when the value was raised from 30 to 36 million, and before that, in 2021, when the limit increased from 15 to 30 million. However, not all developers consider this increase to be unequivocally beneficial. Some warn that raising the limit could create additional strain on node operators’ equipment, potentially affecting the network’s stability.

Additionally, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently shared his thoughts on implementing a new type of node to improve privacy within the system.
