On the night of May 5, a missile threat was declared for the first time in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug of Russia since the start of the full-scale war with Ukraine. This city is located 2000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, marking an unprecedented case for the region.

Missile alert and restrictions at Russian airports

The alert signal was sounded in at least 18 regions of the Russian Federation, including the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug within the Tyumen region. The head of the region, Ruslan Kukharchuk, reported that such an alert was declared for the first time since the beginning of the war. As of the morning, the missile threat was lifted, and there were no reports of explosions or other consequences.

Due to the threat, temporary restrictions on the arrival and departure of aircraft were in place at 18 Russian airports. In particular, the “Carpet” plan was implemented at the airports of Volgograd, Izhevsk, Kazan, Nizhnekamsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Orenburg, Orsk, Penza, Perm, Pskov, Samara, Saratov, Tambov, Ulyanovsk, Ufa, Cheboksary, Cherepovets, and Yaroslavl.

Scale of the attack: new regions under threat

Warnings of a possible missile attack affected another 16 regions: Astrakhan, Bryansk, Kaluga, Kurgan, Nizhny Novgorod, Orenburg, Oryol, Penza, Perm Krai, Bashkortostan, Mordovia, Sverdlovsk, Tatarstan, Tula, Udmurtia, and Chelyabinsk regions.

Head of the Center for Occupation Studies, Petro Andriushchenko, reported a nighttime strike on Voronezh, where explosions were recorded in the southern districts of the city. Information regarding the consequences of these incidents is being clarified. No official statements from the Ukrainian side regarding missile launches or attacks on Russian territory had been received at the time of publication.

On the same night, drones heavily attacked the Leningrad region, threatening one of the largest oil refineries in Russia. Additionally, during the declared missile alert, a military factory of JSC “VNIIR-PROGRESS” was attacked in the Chuvash Republic.
