The mobile operator lifecell has begun the process of disabling the 3G network in Ukraine. The reason for this is the implementation of the more advanced VoLTE technology, which promises significant advantages for users.

Plans for 3G Shutdown in Ukraine
In September 2024, 3G was disabled in Slavutych, and in April 2025, this technology will be discontinued in Kolomyia. The next cities that may lose 3G are likely to be Cherkasy. This was reported by the Chief Technology Officer of the merged company “Datagroup-Volia-lifecell” (DVL), Serhiy Tereshchuk.
“The global goal is to gradually replace voice based on 3G with VoLTE, which has numerous advantages for the consumer. … As a result, we are gradually phasing out the 3G technology, which is becoming obsolete in most countries around the world.”
Tereshchuk also noted that transitioning subscribers from 3G to LTE allows for the freeing up of frequencies, which, in particular, reduces energy consumption on the network. He emphasized that for subscribers whose 3G has already been disabled, VoLTE is activated by default, although this does not happen simultaneously for all users.
3G Shutdown by Other Operators
Alongside lifecell, the operator “Kyivstar” also plans to disable 3G, particularly in Kyiv, which is set to occur in June. The company Vodafone has also announced the disconnection of subscribers from 3G. According to analysts, in 2025, Vodafone plans only a partial shutdown of the 3G network in cities where the transition to 4G will take place.
“Allowing this spectrum to be used for 4G is one of the reasons why operators will be shutting down third-generation connectivity. … Another reason is the sufficient number of 4G subscribers.”
