Israel Sets Conditions for Opening the Rafah Checkpoint Under Trump’s Plan

The Israeli authorities have agreed to partially restore the functioning of the Rafah checkpoint as part of the peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, which consists of 20 main points. The opening of the crossing will only allow for the movement of people and will be under strict control of Israeli security forces.

Israel’s Conditions for Hamas and the Return of Hostages

The humanitarian corridor at Rafah will only operate after all living hostages captured by Hamas return home. Additionally, Tel Aviv demands that Hamas make every effort to locate and return the bodies of deceased captives. Currently, the Israel Defense Forces are conducting a special operation to gather information regarding the whereabouts of the remains of Ron Gvili. Israeli representatives emphasize that movement across the border will begin only after the completion of this intelligence mission. To meet the conditions of the plan, Hamas must demonstrate “100% effort” in the repatriation of the deceased bodies.

U.S. Military Activity and International Reaction

Meanwhile, the U.S. is increasing its military presence in the region. According to information from the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), American military forces have begun multi-day maneuvers to enhance operational readiness and strengthen combat capability. The exercises are focusing on mechanisms for rapid deployment and sustained support of forces in the conflict zone in the Middle East, occurring amid complex negotiations regarding a ceasefire and the release of hostages.

“The exercises are aimed at preparing for flexible responses in the region,” American military representatives state.

Experts emphasize that the strict linkage of the Rafah checkpoint’s operations to the fate of the hostages is the main leverage to pressure Hamas. While the Israeli army continues search operations, the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is entirely dependent on the fulfillment of security requirements. The international community is closely monitoring the implementation of Trump’s plan, which aims to stabilize the situation in the region.
