Consequences of the Attack for the Russian Gas Giant

As a result of this cyberattack, key elements of Gazprom’s information infrastructure were destroyed. In particular, the accounting of contracts, schedules, and tariffs was lost, along with critically important information regarding gas and oil supply volumes, financial balances, payment and tax data, licenses, and legal agreements of the company. This may complicate the transportation and gas supply to entire regions of the Russian Federation, as well as reduce the monopoly’s revenue to the Russian budget.

Data Deletion from Management Systems and Backups

Cyber specialists destroyed data from SCADA and GIS systems, which are responsible for managing pressure, consumption, gas and oil balances, as well as information about wells and the corporation’s networks. Additionally, full access to all of Gazprom’s information systems was obtained, allowing the copying of hundreds of terabytes of data.

“Using unique software, all data from Gazprom’s information system stored on physical servers and cloud platforms, including backups, was deleted,” adds our source.

This successful cyber operation by the HUR significantly impacted Gazprom’s operations and became an important component in the fight against Russia’s economic capabilities.
