A Hacker Arrested in Zaporizhzhia for Hacking 5000 Accounts and Mining $4.5 Million

In Zaporizhzhia, police have arrested a 35-year-old resident of Poltava suspected of large-scale cybercrimes. According to law enforcement data, the man has been exploiting vulnerabilities in the systems of international companies since 2018, gaining access to over 5000 accounts of clients from a popular international hosting service.

Scale of Damages and Suspect’s Activities

The perpetrator used the compromised accounts to launch virtual machines and organize illegal cryptocurrency mining. As a result of his actions, the account owners suffered losses amounting to approximately 4.5 million US dollars. During a special operation, officers from the Cyber Police Department, along with international partners including Europol, seized computer equipment, mobile devices, bank cards, cryptocurrency wallets, and other evidence of illegal activity from the suspect.

Legal Consequences and Investigation Details

It is known that the arrested individual was actively operating on specialized hacker forums, where he maintained several accounts. He has been officially charged with unauthorized access to information and communication systems. According to the legislation, such actions can result in up to 15 years of imprisonment.

It is worth noting that Ukrainian law enforcement has previously uncovered other similar crimes, including identifying and arresting illegal mining farms within the country.
