Thanks to the implementation of large language models (LLMs) and advanced algorithms based on artificial intelligence, Google was able to detect fraudsters before their ads were even placed. Key indicators of fraud include identity theft, the use of illegal payment information, and user deception.
“The effectiveness of AI models is complemented by the work of a team of over 100 experts from Google, Ads Safety, Trust and Safety, and DeepMind,” said Alex Rodriguez, head of the advertising security division.
The company also implemented over 50 updates to its AI systems and more than 30 changes to its advertising policies. As a result, the number of complaints about fake ads decreased by 90%. The highest number of blocks was recorded in India—2.9 million accounts and 247 million removed ads, with a primary focus on the finance and gambling sectors.
Overall, last year Google blocked 5.1 billion ads and restricted the distribution of another 9.1 billion. It removed 1.3 billion pages that violated publisher rights and verified 8,900 new political advertisers, resulting in the removal of 10.7 million political ads.
Of all the blocked accounts, 5 million were directly linked to fraudulent activity. Google emphasized that most violators were stopped before their ads were shown to users, indicating the high effectiveness of preventive measures and rapid response.
As a reminder, we previously reported that Google updated its advertising requirements for crypto companies in the EU due to the implementation of MiCA regulations.
