In Germany, the far-right demands Ukraine return aid and compensation for the ‘Nord Stream’

Co-chair of the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) Alice Weidel called for an end to military aid to Ukraine and demanded that Kyiv return the funds spent to support Ukrainian defense. Additionally, the politician expressed a demand for compensation to Germany for the damage to the “Nord Stream” gas pipeline, without providing any evidence of Ukraine’s responsibility for the incident.

Criticism of the government and pro-Russian rhetoric of AfD

Alice Weidel’s speech took place during the AfD political congress in Mülheim, where she publicly questioned the current German government’s policy of supporting Ukraine. According to the politician, “Berlin has supposedly invested over 70 billion euros in Ukraine,” including military aid, which she believes is unreasonable given the internal challenges facing the country.

Weidel also emphasized the need to avoid any involvement of German troops in confrontation with Russia. She appealed to historical events, stating that German society must not allow a situation where

“German tanks move against Russia again.”

Political isolation and intelligence response

The statements from the AfD leader came amid increasing public criticism due to her pro-Russian stance. In May 2025, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution of Germany officially recognized “Alternative for Germany” as a party that poses a threat to democracy. According to German intelligence assessments, the ideology of AfD is based on an ethnic approach to the nation and contradicts fundamental democratic principles, further intensifying societal tension regarding the party’s position on Russia and the war against Ukraine.

Currently, Weidel’s demands for the return of financial aid and compensation for the “Nord Stream” remain a subject of sharp political debate and lack confirmation from facts or official investigations.
