Russia could launch a large-scale attack on European countries if Ukraine loses its ability to resist aggression and the West fails to show unity and resolve. According to retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, the greatest threat comes not only from potential combat actions in the Baltics but also from massive drone attacks on the critical infrastructure of European states.

The Threat of Large-Scale Drone Attacks on Europe
In his interview, General Hodges emphasized that the risk of a Russian attack on NATO countries increases under conditions of Ukraine’s exhaustion and the unwillingness of the U.S. to actively intervene in the situation on the continent. He pointed out that the weakening of the United Kingdom and the disagreements among European partners pose particular danger. Furthermore, Russia is already employing hybrid methods of influence on the West, including sabotage, airspace violations, and drone attacks.
“But they also need to understand that such an attack will not be isolated. It is likely to be accompanied by massive drone strikes on airports and seaports across Europe – on a scale similar to what we are seeing today in Ukraine,” he explained.
The general noted that in the absence of a strong response from European countries, Russia will only escalate its aggression. He believes that massive drone strikes could target airports, seaports, and critical infrastructure across Europe, and the scale of such attacks could be comparable to those currently observed in Ukraine.
European Countries’ Readiness for New Challenges
Although multinational NATO forces, including units from the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Spain, the Netherlands, and the U.S., are already deployed in the Baltic states, and allied air forces are operational, General Hodges pointed out that Europe is not yet prepared for such developments. The armies of Sweden, Finland, and Norway also play an important role in this region.
At the same time, the general highlighted a significant issue – the possible absence of American aviation in the event of a large-scale conflict. In his opinion, this is a weakness that Russia may seek to exploit as a priority.
Separately, Ben Hodges spoke about the sentiments among American military personnel and retired officers. According to him, many are concerned about the actions of the Donald Trump administration and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. There is also concern in military circles regarding the weakening of support for Ukraine and the deterioration of cooperation between the U.S. and its allies. The general emphasized that for the United States, support from partners in logistics, military presence, and intelligence activities is vital.
