The design of Ukrainian coins with a denomination of 1 and 2 hryvnias will remain unchanged in the near future, despite the National Bank of Ukraine’s (NBU) previous plans for modernization. However, the bank has not abandoned this initiative, and it may be implemented after the situation in the country stabilizes.

This was reported by NBU Deputy Chairman Oleksiy Shaban, who noted that discussions about new coin designs were initiated back in 2021. At that time, Ukrainians expressed dissatisfaction with the similarity of the coins to each other, and requests were sent to the regulator from organizations and associations representing people with disabilities.
“We then formed a working group and began discussions on possible changes in the design – of one of these coins or both. But, unfortunately, the full-scale war put this work on hold,” Shaban said.
He also emphasized that after addressing the pressing issues in the country, the question of changing the coin designs will be raised again. Thus, Ukrainians can expect a new look for either one of the coins or both – 1 and 2 hryvnias.
