In Ukraine, cases of fraud using fake emails allegedly sent by the State Tax Service have intensified. Opening attachments in these emails puts victims at risk, as the perpetrators can gain remote access to their computers. The main characteristic of such emails is the incorrectly specified domain of the email address.

This is reported by Finway

This information has been confirmed by the Center for Counteracting Disinformation. According to analysts, this is already the second wave of fraudulent mailings received by taxpayers from various regions of Ukraine in the past week.

Statement from the Head of the Tax Service

The Head of the State Tax Service, Ruslan Kravchenko, stated that the government agency has no connection to these mailings.

“The attachments in the emails contain malware that activates upon opening the PDF file. Once opened, software is launched that provides remote access to your computer for the perpetrators”

, Kravchenko noted.

Recommendations for Protection

The Tax Service also provided several tips on how to protect oneself from fraud:

  • Check the sender’s email address: official email addresses of the STS should contain the domain name “tax.gov.ua” after the @ symbol.
  • Do not open attachments in suspicious messages.
  • If there are doubts about the origin of the email, one should contact the tax service directly.
