Former CIA Employee Steals 300 Gold Bars Worth $40 Million

Former high-ranking CIA employee David Rush is accused of a massive gold theft totaling over $40 million. According to federal authorities, 300 gold bars were seized during a search of his home, along with approximately $2 million in cash and a collection of expensive watches.

Case Details and Investigation Progress

As noted in court documents, Rush was arrested last week. From November of last year to March 2026, he repeatedly requested and received large amounts of foreign currency, as well as tens of millions of dollars in gold bars under the guise of business expenses. Some of the valuables were discovered in a storage facility located near his office.

The lawsuit claims that Rush “knowingly misappropriated, stole, and embezzled valuable items belonging to the United States” for personal use, but it remains unclear what exactly the CIA employee intended to do with the money.

Currently, David Rush is in custody awaiting a hearing in federal court in Alexandria, scheduled for Friday. The detained man’s lawyers have so far refrained from commenting on the situation.

Doubtful Biography and Additional Circumstances

As the FBI notes, Rush has submitted false information about his education and military service for years. He claimed to be a U.S. Navy pilot, a graduate of Clemson University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, but investigations revealed that these claims were not true. In reality, he served briefly in the Navy and was in the reserves from 2004 to 2015, but did not receive training as a pilot and did not attend the mentioned educational institutions.

Meanwhile, the materials mention another case: in 2017, British military vehicle collector Nick Mead unexpectedly found gold bars inside a decommissioned Russian T-54/69 tank that he purchased on eBay.
