In Ukraine, certain categories of citizens can receive two pension payments simultaneously. This applies to individuals with a special status related to the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and those who worked in contaminated areas.

Who Can Claim Two Pensions in February

The Pension Fund of Ukraine reports that double pension payments are granted to specific citizens. This concerns old-age pensions with the right to early retirement for those who worked or lived in areas of radioactive contamination. In such cases, the retirement age may be reduced by 1 to 13 years, and accordingly, the required insurance period is also reduced for this duration; however, the insurance period cannot be less than 15 years.

The amount of the old-age pension is determined based on the Law of Ukraine “On Mandatory State Pension Insurance” and depends on the length of the insurance period and the individual’s salary level.

Additional Payments for Victims of the Chernobyl Disaster

For individuals with disabilities due to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, special disability pensions are assigned. They can be calculated in two ways:

  • considering actual income losses for work in the exclusion zone from 1986 to 1990;
  • or based on a salary determined from five times the minimum wage.

In addition to the basic state pensions for old age or disability, an additional pension is also assigned. Its amount depends on the category of the affected individuals:

  • persons belonging to category 1;
  • participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster;
  • other individuals with disabilities who have established a causal link to the Chernobyl disaster;
  • persons belonging to categories 2–4;
  • children with disabilities and individuals affected by radiation sickness due to the disaster.

For participants in the liquidation of the Chernobyl disaster with established disabilities, the minimum pension payment amount is fixed and cannot be less than:

  • 13,376.21 UAH – for individuals with a disability of group I;
  • 10,700.97 UAH – for individuals with a disability of group II;
  • 8,025.73 UAH – for individuals with a disability of group III.

“In the event of the death of a breadwinner who was affected by the Chernobyl disaster, a pension due to the loss of the breadwinner is assigned to non-working family members,” added the Pension Fund of Ukraine.

If the breadwinner was a liquidator of the Chernobyl disaster, the pension amount in the event of the loss of the breadwinner may be determined either by their income in the exclusion zone from 1986 to 1990 or based on five times the minimum wage.
