In the context of constant price increases for food in Ukraine, bloggers conducted an experiment to compare the cost of daily purchases in supermarkets of two countries — Spain and Ukraine. The popular Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona and the Ukrainian chain ATB were selected for the analysis.

Which Products Were Included in the Basket
As part of the experiment, the basket included the following everyday items: bread, potatoes, apples, pasta, milk, eggs, sunflower oil, chicken fillet, Gouda cheese, and a bottle of water. The price comparison revealed a significant difference between the two countries.
- Half a loaf of bread: Spain — 44 UAH, Ukraine — 36 UAH
- Potatoes: Spain — 97 UAH/kg, Ukraine — 40 UAH/kg
- Apples: Spain — 134 UAH/kg, Ukraine — 70 UAH/kg
- Pasta: Spain — 37 UAH/package, Ukraine — 54 UAH
- Milk: Spain — 45 UAH/liter, Ukraine — 56 UAH for 850 ml
- Eggs: Spain — 120 UAH for 12 pieces, Ukraine — 75.90 UAH for 10 pieces
- Sunflower oil: Spain — 83 UAH/liter, Ukraine — 81 UAH/liter
- Chicken fillet: Spain — 280 UAH/kg, Ukraine — 191 UAH/kg
- Gouda cheese: Spain — 116 UAH for 250 g, Ukraine — 86 UAH for 150 g
- Bottle of water: Spain — 60 UAH, Ukraine — 71 UAH
Total Cost and Income Level
The total cost of the same set of products amounted to 851 UAH (18 euros) in Ukraine, while in Spain it was 1023 UAH (22 euros). Another important factor for understanding purchasing power is the average salary level: in Spain, this figure is around 1700 euros, while in Ukraine it is nearly 480 euros.
“In Ukraine, such a food basket cost 851 UAH or 18 euros, while in Spain it was 1023 UAH or 22 euros,” noted a man.
Thus, although prices for individual products in Ukraine may be lower, the ratio of income to the cost of everyday goods remains significantly lower than in Spain.
