Personal Artifacts from the Early Years of Bitcoin

Charlie Shrem became one of the pioneers in the development of the Bitcoin industry, investing in cryptocurrency back in 2011. Later, he and like-minded individuals created the BitInstant platform, which at its peak processed up to 30% of all global Bitcoin transactions. His contribution to the industry’s development is hard to overestimate, and the personal items being auctioned are a testament to the history of this field’s formation.

Unique Lots and Auction Details

The auction is organized on the Scarce City platform. The list of lots includes, in particular, the first issue of Bitcoin Magazine from May 2012. The publication bears Charlie Shrem’s personal signature and numbering, confirming its authenticity. In addition to the magazine, the auction features a ring, a prison diary, a boarding pass after his arrest, and other significant items.

“These items are not just mine; they are the scars and sparks from the early days of Bitcoin and its first fire. My prison diary, my first silver Bitcoin ring, which I used to supply thousands of people with the ‘orange pill’, the boarding pass after my arrest, the first issue of the Bitcoin magazine. These are fragments of a life lived when the world still did not believe. We must preserve them now, and you must carry the burden of those days. Proof that freedom and Bitcoin are everlasting.”

A total of 12 lots are being auctioned, with bidding starting on the evening of September 16, 2025. You can view the complete list of items and auction details on the Scarce City platform’s website.

It is worth noting that in 2014, Charlie Shrem was sentenced to two years in prison for facilitating unlicensed money transmission in the Silk Road case. He was released in July 2016. Subsequently, Shrem became involved in the development of projects such as Dash and continued to participate in the growth of the cryptocurrency industry.

As a reminder, in January 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump pardoned Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, who had spent 12 years in prison.
