Canada to Provide Ukraine with New Military Aid and Expand Sanctions Against Russia

Military Support and Credit Assistance

As part of the new aid package, Ukraine will receive modern drones, combat helicopters, and additional ammunition. According to Mark Carney, the total amount of direct military support exceeds two billion Canadian dollars. Additionally, Canada will provide Ukraine with a concessional loan of 2 billion Canadian dollars, which also amounts to about 1.5 billion US dollars. The interest on this loan will be covered by frozen Russian assets.

“We are providing Ukraine with additional military assistance: drones, helicopters, and ammunition. This involves more than two billion dollars in direct military aid to Kyiv,” said the Canadian Prime Minister.

Expansion of Sanctions Against Russia

In addition to military support, the Canadian government has announced an expansion of sanctions against the Russian Federation. New restrictions have been imposed on a number of individuals and over forty organizations, both within Russia and outside of it, that facilitate the circumvention of established sanctions. In particular, more than 200 vessels from Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” which are used to evade international restrictions, have been sanctioned.

These actions by Canada are aimed at strengthening support for Ukraine in its fight against aggression and limiting the Russian Federation’s ability to circumvent international sanctions.
