British Company Plans to Produce Biochar in Rivne Region

The Rivne region is considering the possibility of launching a new investment project for the production of biochar (bio-coal). Representatives of the regional government have held negotiations with the British company Tellus Conservation regarding the establishment of a modern enterprise that will produce biochar using waste biomass from forestry and woodworking enterprises.

Potential of Rivne Region for Biochar Production

The unique combination of natural resources in the region promotes the implementation of innovative solutions in organic farming. The northern part of the region provides enterprises with raw materials due to significant forest areas, while the south is home to extensive agricultural lands where biochar can be effectively used to improve soil fertility. This synergy enhances the economic viability of the project.

The initiative involves not only the production of biochar but also the effective use of thermal energy generated as a by-product of the technological process. If successfully implemented, this project will serve as a pilot and can be scaled for broader adoption in other regions. Tellus Conservation has stated its readiness to process up to 2,000 tons of biomass annually.

Government Support and Development of Bioenergy

To stimulate the development of similar initiatives and unite the efforts of business and the state, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has established a Coordinating Council for the Development of Bioenergy Potential in the Agricultural Sector. Among the main tasks of this new body are increasing the share of biofuels in the country’s energy balance, developing the raw material base, and reducing production costs for bioenergy products.

“The initiative involves using biomass waste from forestry and woodworking enterprises to produce biochar – a product that enhances soil in organic farming.”
