Britain Introduces New Requirements for EU Tourists

The United Kingdom is introducing a new requirement for tourists from the European Union regarding the acquisition of an electronic travel authorization. Starting from April 2, 2025, European travelers planning to visit Britain will be required to obtain an electronic authorization in advance.

This initiative is part of the UK government’s efforts to strengthen immigration control and ensure security at the borders. According to the new rules, all visitors who do not require a visa for entry will need to purchase the authorization online. The cost of the authorization will be £10 (approximately €12), but from April 9, the price will increase to £16.

Citizens of Ireland are exempt from this requirement. The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system was first introduced for tourists from countries outside Europe last year, including visitors from the USA, Canada, and Australia.

“The expansion of the ETA system worldwide underscores our commitment to enhancing security through technology and innovation,” said Immigration Minister Seema Malhotra last month.

According to the UK Home Office, applying for an ETA will be easy through a dedicated mobile app. To obtain the authorization, applicants will need to provide a photograph, biographical information, and answer a series of questions regarding eligibility and criminal history. After a successful application, the electronic authorization will be linked to the applicant’s passport.

The ETA allows travelers to make multiple trips to the United Kingdom for up to six months within a two-year period.
