Americans Express Mixed Opinions on Trump’s Tariffs

Opinions among citizens of the United States regarding the introduction of new tariffs, the country’s role in alliances, and aid to Ukraine have proven to be seriously divided. A survey conducted by The Wall Street Journal from March 27 to April 1, prior to President Donald Trump’s announcement of new tariffs, showed significant differences in the views of Republicans and Democrats.

According to the survey results, 77% of Republicans view the impact of tariffs on the economy positively, while 93% of Democrats believe that tariffs lead to price increases. The majority of registered voters (54%) oppose Trump’s plans to impose new tariffs. At the same time, 81% of Republican voters feel that the United States’ allies do not take enough responsibility for their own defense and that American tax dollars should not be used to protect them.

Attitudes Toward International Alliances

According to 83% of Democrats, foreign alliances are a source of strength and should continue to be funded. Overall, 81% of Democrats have a positive view of NATO, while only 31% of Republicans support the organization. Regarding financial aid to Ukraine, 83% of Democrats advocate for its continuation to defend against Russia, while 79% of Republicans express opposition.

Consequences of Introducing New Tariffs

According to the survey, a significant majority of voters (51%) supported a substantial reduction in foreign aid to other countries, while 45% opposed it. It is worth noting that earlier this month, the Trump administration announced the introduction of new tariffs on imported goods, primarily targeting China and other trading partners.

The introduction of new tariffs has caused significant fluctuations in financial markets and raised concerns among investors and consumers.

China and other countries have already announced the imposition of corresponding tariffs on American goods, while Washington has reported that it is imposing tariffs of 104% against China.
