Payment company American Express has introduced a new digital feature for travelers — NFT “travel stamps,” integrated into its updated app. These unique digital tokens are created on the Ethereum blockchain and issued in ERC-721 (NFT) format on Coinbase’s Base network.

Purpose of the NFT Travel Stamps
Unlike regular NFTs, the “travel stamps” from American Express do not have market value and are not intended for sale. Their main purpose is to preserve the travel history of Amex cardholders, providing them with a memorable digital record of each event. Travelers receive a new stamp each time they use their Amex card while traveling.
“This is a worthless ERC-721, technically an NFT, but we didn’t want to position it that way. We wanted to talk about these things as stamps, which are tokens that naturally fit into the travel experience.”
Long-Term Strategy and Enhanced App Features
American Express views the “travel stamps” as a tool for future partnership integrations that will enhance the program’s value for users. The company emphasizes that the core idea is not to sell tokens or achieve short-term profit, but to create a unique experience for travelers alongside Amex.
In addition to the NFT stamps, the new app offers enhanced features for travel planning, as well as innovative opportunities for clients of the premium Centurion Lounge.
It is worth noting that back in May 2023, American Express announced the active implementation of artificial intelligence in its services — for transaction verification, credit limit determination, customer sentiment analysis, and forecasting their financial status.
