The technological agenda yielded to socio-economic reforms
Following the vote count, Mamdani received 50.6% of voter support, while Cuomo garnered 41.2%. Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa trailed significantly behind. During his campaign, Cuomo proposed creating a position for a director of innovation, who would oversee the development of blockchain and cryptocurrencies, as well as promote public-private partnerships in the digital technology sector. However, despite his innovative focus, his initiatives did not gain widespread support among voters.
According to Rebecca Liao, CEO of the Saga protocol, Cuomo represents the “democratic establishment,” which traditionally maintains close ties with the tech sector. The entrepreneur noted that his platform might attract business attention, but not voter support.
Mamdani’s campaign, on the other hand, focused on issues of social inequality and urban economic reforms, which secured his victory. After losing in the Democratic primary, Cuomo decided to run as an independent candidate, but his support remained limited.
New Jersey Elections: Cryptocurrency support brought victory to Sherrill
Incumbent New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who actively supported the development of cryptocurrencies and received part of his salary in Bitcoin, dropped out of the race in September 2025 due to financial difficulties and media pressure. It was during his tenure that the city established the first national office for digital assets and blockchain.
Meanwhile, in neighboring New Jersey, attention turned to the gubernatorial election, where pro-cryptocurrency candidate Miki Sherrill outpaced Republican Jack Ciattarelli. The organization Stand With Crypto noted that it mobilized tens of thousands of digital asset supporters to participate in the election. According to their data, there are over 80,000 supporters of the movement in the state, correlating with the vote difference in the previous election. Representatives from Stand With Crypto emphasized that the support from crypto activists played a key role in Sherrill’s victory, as she received the highest rating for her pro-cryptocurrency initiatives.
