Wholesale Prices for Greenhouse Tomatoes in Ukraine Decreased by 13%

In Ukraine, there is a gradual decrease in prices for greenhouse tomatoes, which is the result of supply exceeding demand for the first time in a long period. By the end of this week, wholesale prices for tomatoes are 70–80 hryvnias per kilogram, which is 13% lower compared to last Friday.

Reasons for the Price Drop of Tomatoes

According to analysts, the main factors contributing to the decrease in value are a significant reduction in demand for tomatoes and the low quality of the products entering the market. Due to rising prices in previous weeks, many sellers decided to hold back their vegetables in hopes of further price increases, but this led to a deterioration in their quality.

“For the first time in a long time, supply has exceeded demand.”

Market Situation and Prices in Supermarkets

Most greenhouse farms have already completed the main harvest, so the market is mainly seeing leftover batches of tomatoes, which are of below-average quality. Although the overall supply has also decreased, the reduction in demand has been more significant, leading to a decrease in the price of the vegetable.

As of today, prices for Ukrainian greenhouse tomatoes have effectively aligned with last year’s levels, and it is forecasted that the trend of decreasing prices may continue.

In supermarkets across the country, the price of tomatoes varies. For instance, at Varus, bulk tomatoes are currently offered at a discount for 89.9 UAH per kilogram, at Silpo, a kilogram of Ukrainian tomatoes costs 127.6 hryvnias, while at ATB, greenhouse tomatoes are sold for 99.89 UAH per kilogram.
