Ukrzaliznytsia reminds passengers that for most domestic routes, an electronic ticket on a smartphone is sufficient. However, for some international routes, the use of a paper ticket remains mandatory — specifically, on routes to Austria and Hungary.
This is reported by Finway
Why a paper ticket is required on international routes
The need for printed tickets is due to the collaboration between Ukrzaliznytsia and the railway operators of Austria and Hungary. During the journey, representatives of these companies check travel documents directly in the carriages and make special marks on them for their own reporting purposes. The technical specifics of these checks do not allow for the use of digital tickets.
Routes that require a paper ticket
Ukrzaliznytsia has identified seven international routes for which a printed ticket is necessary:
- 009K Kyiv — Budapest,
- 010K Budapest — Kyiv,
- 749D Kyiv — Vienna,
- 149D Vienna — Kyiv,
- 140D Chop — Vienna,
- 146D Chop — Vienna,
- 143D Vienna — Chop.
You can prepare a ticket for printing through the official carrier’s application or on the website uz.gov.ua.
“Ukrzaliznytsia explicitly warns that the absence of a paper document on these routes may result in a requirement to pay for transit travel again. This means that the passenger effectively risks paying twice — for the ticket purchased online and for the travel that the foreign railway worker will demand.”
It is important to consider these rules when planning a trip on the specified routes to avoid unforeseen expenses during the journey.
We remind you that starting from May 12, 2026, Ukrzaliznytsia has also expanded the ability to purchase online tickets for all suburban trains across Ukraine.
