Vitalik Buterin announces the Kohaku framework to enhance Ethereum privacy

The Devconnect Argentina 2025 technology conference is ongoing in Buenos Aires, where Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin introduced a new toolkit called Kohaku. The event runs from November 17 to 22, attracting leading experts from the blockchain industry.

Main goal of the Kohaku framework

Kohaku is open-source software designed to enhance privacy on the Ethereum blockchain. This framework is part of a larger roadmap aimed at implementing a comprehensive privacy system within the Ethereum ecosystem. The goal of the development is to ensure user data protection and improve transaction privacy in Ethereum-based applications.

Kohaku is built as a modular stack, combining a lightweight client, wallet, and a range of protocols, including Railgun and Privacy Pools. With these tools, developers gain the ability to implement advanced privacy protection mechanisms by default, which is particularly relevant in light of the growing number of decentralized applications.

Presentation details and Buterin’s thoughts

During the presentation, the Privacy Pools team demonstrated how integrating the wallet with the Railgun protocol allows for concealing users’ fund movements. This functionality is key to enhancing the anonymity of financial transactions on the network.

“Privacy is freedom. It allows us to live as we see fit, without constantly worrying about how our actions will be perceived by various centralized and decentralized coercive political and social structures,” Buterin stated.

Currently, Kohaku is in the development stage, and the date for its full public launch has yet to be determined.

During his speech, Buterin also sharply criticized former FTX exchange CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, emphasizing that he embodies values that directly contradict the ideals of Ethereum.
