Ukrzaliznytsia Receives 3,000 Tons of Modern Nippon Steel Rails from Japan

JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” has replenished its rail infrastructure fleet with a modern batch of high-tech P-65 rails produced by the Japanese company Nippon Steel. The delivery took place as part of the third phase of the Emergency Recovery Program implemented by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

New Technologies for a Stable Railway Network

This time, the railway workers will receive a total of 3,000 tons of rails worth approximately 4 million US dollars. To date, nearly 2,000 tons have already been delivered, and the complete delivery is expected by the end of January 2026. During the official equipment handover ceremony, innovative solutions for processing and fastening the new rails were demonstrated. In particular, specialists presented mobile complexes for welding rails directly on the track sections and showcased the process of thermal jointing of the seams.

The use of such technologies allows for the formation of a “velvet track” — a continuous railway bed that significantly extends the lifespan of the infrastructure and provides a more comfortable and smooth train ride.

“Thanks to Japan’s support, we are addressing the need for materials whose production in Ukraine has currently ceased. This is a strategic step towards stabilizing the railway network, which currently handles the majority of transportation — both freight and passenger,” noted Deputy Minister of Community and Territorial Development Oleksii Balesta.

Japan’s Support for the Ukrainian Railway

Since the onset of the large-scale aggression by the Russian Federation, with the assistance of the Japanese government and JICA, nearly 25,000 tons of rails have already been delivered to Ukraine. This has allowed for the renewal of over 193 kilometers of railway tracks on key routes of the Lviv, South-Western, Dnipro, Southern, and Odesa railways.

In addition to the rails, Ukrainian railway workers have received 24 units of modern construction and loading-unloading equipment from leading brands such as Komatsu, Toyota, and Sonalika, of which 22 units are specifically rail machinery. The delivered excavators, loaders, and bulldozers have already logged over 13,000 machine hours during emergency recovery operations. The total value of the equipment and materials provided under the first two phases of the program exceeded 42 million US dollars.
