Ukrzaliznytsia achieved record results in freight transportation in May and June 2025, recording transportation volumes of 16.3 million tons and 16.2 million tons respectively. These are the highest monthly figures observed since the onset of the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation.

Growth in Transportation and Its Impact on the Company’s Economy
Compared to previous months – April and March 2024, when 15.7 million tons and 16 million tons of cargo were transported, the growth in June amounted to 10.3% year-on-year. This increase is primarily attributed to the processing of transitional manual transportation documents by the branch of the Unified Settlement Center. Initially, Ukrzaliznytsia anticipated that in 2025, freight transportation would decrease by 10 million tons – to 165 million tons per year, which led management to consider the possibility of raising tariffs to compensate for potential financial losses.
Financial Results and Public Criticism
By the end of 2024, the company reported an operating profit of 20.39 billion hryvnias specifically from freight transportation. A significant portion of these funds was used to cover losses in passenger transportation through the mechanism of cross-subsidization. Meanwhile, representatives of the business community have repeatedly expressed concerns about this practice, deeming it economically unjustified.
