In Ukraine, there are proposals to increase childbirth benefits and introduce new social guarantees

Changes are being prepared in Ukraine regarding social support for families with children: a significant increase in the one-time childbirth assistance is planned, along with the introduction of additional monthly payments. According to the government’s initiative, the one-time assistance for childbirth may rise from the current 10,320 UAH to 50,000 UAH, which is almost five times more than the current amount that has not been reviewed in recent years.

Monthly Assistance and Choices for Parents

The draft law includes another important change — the introduction of monthly assistance for women without work experience of up to 7,000 UAH. Currently, this payment is less than 1,000 UAH, which, according to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, does not meet the real needs of young mothers. Under the new law, women will be able to receive significantly greater support in the first year after childbirth, allowing them to cover basic expenses.

One of the parents or guardians will have the right to monthly childcare assistance until the child reaches one year of age. The amount of this payment is still being determined by the government, but it is emphasized that it is about comprehensive financial support for families during the most challenging period of the child’s life.

“After the first year, the family will have a choice: return to work or stay home until the child is three years old. If parents choose the first option, the state will pay 8,000 UAH monthly for childcare in nursery. If parental leave is extended, the state will continue to pay the single social contribution for one of the parents until the child reaches the age of three, ensuring the preservation of employment and pension experience even during maternity leave,” noted Denys Shmyhal.

Additional Forms of Assistance and Prospects of the Law

Along with increasing the main payments, the government plans to maintain the “baby package” in two formats: as a natural assistance or as a cash compensation of over 7,500 UAH. Additionally, a “school package” is planned — 5,000 UAH for each first-grader, which will allow families to purchase necessary school supplies, clothing, and footwear.

The draft law still needs to be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada. The Ministry of Social Policy is already conducting consultations with the Ministry of Finance to allocate the necessary funds for the implementation of the program in the 2026 budget. It is expected that the parliament will consider and adopt the law in the coming months, and its provisions will come into effect on January 1, 2026, subject to approval.
