Trump threatens economic sanctions against Russia and Ukraine if a peace agreement is not reached

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States is considering the possibility of imposing extensive economic sanctions and increasing tariffs not only against Russia but also against Ukraine if the parties do not reach an agreement on signing a peace treaty. According to him, in the absence of progress towards peace, both countries may face severe economic consequences.

White House Position on Sanctions

The head of the White House emphasized that he is prepared to take tough economic measures if an agreement to end the war is not reached. Trump stressed that sanctions or increased tariffs could be applied to both Russia and Ukraine, as well as to other countries with which the U.S. collaborates. He underscored his determination regarding economic pressure to achieve peace.

“I will impose sanctions or a very tough tariff policy that will be very costly for Russia, or Ukraine, or anyone else with whom the U.S. deals.”

Sanction Policy Regarding the Energy Sector

Despite the tough statements, the U.S. has postponed the imposition of sanctions against the Serbian oil company NIS, which is owned by Russia, for the sixth time. This enterprise operates the only oil refinery in Serbia with an annual capacity of 4.8 million tons, which meets a significant portion of the domestic oil needs. The introduction of restrictions could jeopardize the supply of energy resources through the Croatian company Janaf and negatively impact Serbia’s energy security.

Trump also announced intentions to strengthen support for NATO allies supplying military aid to Ukraine and emphasized the importance of signing a peace agreement to stabilize the situation in the region.
