Trump’s Tariff Policy Threatens a Global Financial Crisis, Says Merz

The tariff policy of U.S. President Donald Trump could become a catalyst for a global financial crisis. This opinion was expressed by Friedrich Merz, the next chancellor of Germany, in an interview with the publication Handelsblatt.

Merz emphasized that the imposition of high tariffs by the U.S. increases the likelihood of financial problems on the global stage. He advocated for the necessity of a free trade agreement between Europe and America, noting that “I hope for a new transatlantic free trade agreement. Zero tariffs on all goods would be beneficial for both sides.”

The politician also pointed out that Europe should focus on markets in third countries in case the U.S. completely withdraws from global trade. “Trump’s policy raises the risk that a financial crisis will occur sooner than expected. We Europeans must prepare and provide a convincing response to these challenges,” Merz added.
