Trump Announces Trade War with the EU: Consequences for Automakers and Aerospace Manufacturers

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 50% tariff on goods produced in the European Union. The new tariffs could take effect as early as June 1, as Trump stated that negotiations with the EU have not yielded the desired results.

According to the president, the European Union was created to gain trade advantages over the United States. Trump noted that tariffs will not apply to goods produced by European manufacturers within the United States. He also emphasized that he no longer intends to enter into a trade agreement with the EU.

Negative Impact on the Economy

Analysts warn that the introduction of a 50% tariff could lead to a 1.7% decrease in Germany’s gross domestic product (GDP) over the next three years. According to the Financial Times, the automotive, aerospace, and chemical sectors in the U.S. will be the most affected. For example, last year, pharmaceuticals became the top exported goods from the EU to the U.S., totaling nearly 80 billion euros.

EU’s Response

Aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus, as well as well-known automakers including Audi, Porsche, Volvo Cars, and Mercedes-Benz, will also feel the negative impact of these measures. In response to U.S. actions, the European Union is considering implementing reciprocal measures, including tariffs on American goods amounting to up to 95 billion euros, including products from Boeing, cars, and bourbon.
