Details of the announcement and partners’ reactions
The intentions of Washington became known through two official letters that Trump published on the social network Truth Social on Saturday morning. In particular, the U.S. president addressed key trading partners, warning of the introduction of increased tariffs if negotiations do not lead to new agreements. The letter to the EU was drafted in the same manner as over twenty similar warnings that the president sent throughout the week.
The European Union had hoped to sign a preliminary agreement with the U.S. that would avoid the imposition of tariffs; however, Trump’s statement at the end of the week dashed hopes for a quick resolution of the disputes.
Position on Mexico and security issues
In his address to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump positively assessed the country’s efforts in the area of security, but emphasized that the measures taken are insufficient for full control over the situation at the border. He highlighted the issue of cartel activities that are trying to turn the region into a trafficking hub.
“Mexico has still not stopped the cartels that are trying to turn all of North America into a drug trafficking hub. Obviously, I cannot allow this!” – Trump stated.
Overall, during the current week, the U.S. president announced his intention to impose increased tariffs on 25 countries worldwide. The introduction of such restrictions could significantly impact international trade relations and lead to a reevaluation of cooperation terms with the United States.
