Requirements for Work Experience and Documents for Pension Eligibility
Disability pensions are the main source of income for many Ukrainians. However, the status of a person with a disability does not guarantee automatic pension assignment. The main factor is the insurance record: if it is insufficient, the person will not receive the payment. For example, for individuals with Group I disabilities at the age of 30, three years of insurance experience is sufficient, while Groups II and III require four years. If the necessary work experience is lacking, the pension will be denied. An exception is made for military personnel and participants of the Euromaidan — they are entitled to a pension regardless of the number of years of service.
Reasons for Payment Denials and Risks for Recipients
Another common reason for payment denials is issues with documents. An incomplete set or inaccuracies in the submitted papers can lead to the loss of state assistance. To apply for a pension, it is necessary to provide a passport, an application, an identification code, documents regarding work experience and income, a medical certificate confirming the established disability, as well as additional documents for military personnel: certificates of service and reasons for obtaining disability.
“A separate category of risk is those who did not undergo a repeated medical examination. After the start of the full-scale war, for some individuals, this procedure became mandatory, and the deadline for its completion expired on April 1, 2026. Those who ignored the re-examination automatically lose their disability status along with benefits and payments.”
Recipients who did not undergo a repeated medical examination by April 1, 2026, automatically lose their status as a person with a disability, as well as the associated social benefits and financial payments. Furthermore, if during the re-examination the individual is deemed healthy, the pension is canceled, and men of conscription age lose the right to deferment from mobilization.
Even formal errors or missed deadlines can lead to the loss of stable income. Therefore, in the coming months, compliance with document requirements and undergoing medical examinations becomes a critically important issue for many Ukrainians.
