State Statistics Service has completed the assessment of Ukraine’s population, but the data is not yet public

The State Statistics Service of Ukraine has announced the completion of the population assessment for the country. However, these data remain unknown to the general public as discussions with the government regarding the format and timing of their release are still ongoing. The delay is due to the sensitivity of such information in the context of the ongoing war.

Discussion on the format and security of the release

Head of the State Statistics Service, Arsen Makarchuk, emphasized that the agency conducted calculations based on statistical indicators and administrative population registers. Currently, discussions are taking place not only regarding the accuracy and reliability of the obtained figures but also about how to present them to the public, in what volume, and at what time. Special attention is being paid to methodological aspects and the consideration of the complex circumstances of wartime.

“We have conducted the necessary calculations and prepared the population estimate based on available statistical data and existing administrative registers. We are currently discussing the indicators with the government within the framework of interagency cooperation, particularly the issues of format, volume, and timing of their release,” Makarchuk stated.

Planning an expert discussion and prospects for a census

To ensure maximum trust in the published figures, the State Statistics Service plans to organize a professional expert discussion during the presentation of the results. This is intended to give the data not only official status but also public recognition and support from experts.

Regarding the issue of conducting a population census, Arsen Makarchuk reminded that current legislation prohibits such activities during a state of war and for at least six months after its conclusion. At the same time, he emphasized that a census would only be appropriate after the situation in the country stabilizes, when it becomes possible to ensure the quality and safety of this large-scale work.
