Restrictions on the Use of Air Bases and Airspace

According to Spanish media reports, Madrid has not only prohibited the use of airspace for operations related to the war in Iran but has also closed access to its military bases at Rota and Morón de la Frontera for American fighter jets and refueling aircraft involved in this operation. The restrictions also apply to US planes based in third countries such as the United Kingdom and France.

“We do not allow the use of military bases or airspace for actions related to the war in Iran,” she told reporters in Madrid.

Cooperation Between Spain and the US and Washington’s Reaction

Despite the new restrictions, other aspects of cooperation between Spain and the US remain in effect. In particular, logistical support continues for about 80,000 American troops stationed in Europe. As emphasized by Economy Minister Carlos Cuervo, this decision is part of the Spanish government’s policy of not participating in conflicts that violate international law.

The reaction from the US was swift. President Trump, during a meeting with Friedrich Merz, sharply criticized Madrid’s actions and announced intentions to reduce trade operations with Spain. According to him, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been instructed to suspend all trade ties with Madrid. The US President emphasized that he respects the Spanish people but does not support the actions of the country’s leadership.
