Apple’s European division – Apple Distribution International – has been fined over $516,000 in the United Kingdom for financial transactions that violated the sanctions regime against Russian companies.

Reasons for the Fine Imposed on Apple
British regulators found that in 2022, Apple Distribution International made two payments to the Russian online platform Okko without prior approval from the relevant authorities. It is worth noting that at the time of these transactions, Okko was already under the control of a company listed on the sanctions list.
“The situation demonstrates the British authorities’ stricter approach to enforcing sanctions. Even indirect financial ties with sanctioned entities can lead to fines if companies do not obtain the necessary approvals.”
Increased Oversight and Consequences for International Business
This case highlights that British authorities are closely monitoring compliance with sanctions policy. Violations, even in the form of technical or indirect financial connections with sanctioned entities, can result in significant fines and negative consequences for a business’s reputation. This further underscores the necessity for thorough due diligence on counterparties, their ownership structures, and adherence to all regulatory requirements in the field of international transactions.
It is worth reminding that recently, the Council of the European Union extended restrictive measures against the Russian Federation until February 2027 in response to its aggression against Ukraine.
