Serhiy Tarakanov Appointed General Director of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the candidacy of Serhiy Tarakanov for the position of General Director of the state specialized enterprise “Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.” The relevant government order No. 1033-r was published on September 25, 2025.

“To agree with the proposal of the Ministry of Energy regarding the appointment of Tarakanov Serhiy Oleksandrovych as the General Director of the state specialized enterprise ‘Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant,'” the document states.

According to the enterprise, a contract has already been signed with the newly appointed leader. Serhiy Tarakanov has significant experience in the energy sector. He was born on September 20, 1980, in Mykolaiv Oblast. In 2002, he graduated from the Sevastopol National Institute of Nuclear Energy and Industry with a degree in “Nuclear Energy.”

Experience and Professional Path of Serhiy Tarakanov

For 23 years, Serhiy Tarakanov has worked in various areas of the energy sector. Among his workplaces are the Yuzhnoukrainsk Nuclear Power Plant and the management of the State Enterprise NAEC “Energoatom.” In addition, he has repeatedly participated in expert missions of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Renewable Energy Sector and Nuclear Safety

From 2023 to 2025, Tarakanov dealt with issues related to renewable energy. Recently, a delegation from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development visited the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, where they discussed nuclear safety issues together with representatives from the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine and the State Agency for the Management of the Exclusion Zone.
