Serbia Extended Gas Contract with Russia Despite EU Support for Energy Carrier Refusal

Serbia and Russia have signed a new agreement that supplements the existing gas contract, which is set to expire in May 2025. According to this agreement, from June 1 to September 30 of this year, Belgrade will receive 6.1 million cubic meters of gas daily at a price of €290 per 1,000 cubic meters. Serbia’s further goal is to secure stable gas supplies from Russia at a level of 8 million cubic meters per day, as well as an additional 4 million cubic meters on cold days.

At the same time, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto once again criticized Ukraine for refusing to extend the transit contract with Russia. He noted that Ukraine has become “one of the main reasons for the energy crisis in Europe.” However, Hungary had already agreed in 2021 to transit Russian gas bypassing Ukraine. According to Szijjarto, Serbia has taken on the role of a transit country instead of Ukraine, as more than 20 million cubic meters of natural gas flow through its territory to Hungary daily, amounting to about 7.5 billion cubic meters per year.

In contrast, the Italian Ministry of Energy has expressed full support for the EU’s efforts to stop importing Russian gas by 2027. Further increases in regasification capacity will allow Italy to boost its imports of liquefied natural gas, particularly from the United States.
