Estimates of Losses on Both Sides and Official Position
Officially, Russia does not disclose information about its losses. The last time Moscow reported the number of dead was in September 2022, when they stated 5,937 servicemen.
“Journalists from the Russian publication ‘Mediazona’, the Russian service of the BBC, and a team of volunteers have identified over 200,000 Russian military personnel who have died in the war since February 2022 based on open sources as of February 24 this year.”
As researchers note, this list is not exhaustive, as not all information about the deceased becomes publicly available. International organizations and intelligence agencies estimate the total losses of Russia (dead and wounded) to be significantly higher. For instance, in December 2025, a NATO representative reported that, according to the alliance, the number of killed and wounded in the Russian army could reach 1.15 million. In November, the average daily losses for Russia were around 1,100 personnel.
The Ukrainian side had long refrained from disclosing data about its losses; however, since 2025, President Volodymyr Zelensky has published them annually. In early February 2026, he reported that since the beginning of the full-scale war, Ukraine has lost 55,000 servicemen. The president also noted that there remains a large number of missing persons.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, stated in January this year that in 2025, the number of personnel losses in the Armed Forces of Ukraine was reduced by 13%. However, detailed information regarding the losses of the Ukrainian army has not been disclosed.
