Estimates of Losses and Official Positions of the Parties
Official Moscow does not disclose its losses in this war. The last reported number of fatalities was in September 2022, when the Russian authorities stated that 5,937 had died. Meanwhile, independent journalists and volunteers, including those from the Russian publication “Mediazona,” the Russian service of the BBC, and volunteer groups, have managed to identify the names of over 200,000 Russian military personnel who have died in the war since February 2022, using open sources.
As journalists note, the list is not exhaustive, as information about the deaths of all military personnel does not become publicly available.
International organizations and intelligence agencies estimate Russia’s total losses (wounded and killed) to be even higher. According to a senior NATO official provided in December 2025, the number of killed and wounded in the Russian armed forces could reach 1.15 million. In November, the average daily losses for Russia were estimated by the alliance to be around 1,100 personnel.
The Ukrainian side has long refrained from disclosing its own losses; however, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in early February 2026 that approximately 55,000 Ukrainian military personnel had died since February 2022. He also emphasized the significant number of missing persons.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported that in 2025, the personnel losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were reduced by 13%. However, details regarding the losses have not been made public.
