At the end of November, the period of massive sales begins, the most famous of which is Black Friday. During this time, stores offer significant discounts on various groups of products, encouraging consumers to make spontaneous purchases. However, a common question arises: can you return or exchange a product that does not fit in size, color, style, or other parameters?

Conditions for Exchanging Goods of Proper Quality
Before purchasing a discounted product, experts advise determining the reason for the discount. The price may be reduced due to damage, defects, seasonality, assortment updates, or clearance of previous collections.
According to Article 9 of the Law of Ukraine on Consumer Rights Protection, a buyer has the right to exchange a non-food product of proper quality if it does not meet personal requirements regarding color, style, dimensions, size, or other characteristics. This rule applies to both full-price items and promotional offers. An exchange can be made within 14 days from the date of purchase, excluding the day of purchase. The seller has the right to extend this period at their discretion.
An exchange is possible provided that:
- the product has not been used;
- the product appearance, consumer properties, labels, and seals are preserved;
- the buyer has a receipt (paper or electronic, including a QR code of the fiscal receipt).
Exceptions to the Rules and Advice for Consumers
There is a list of goods of proper quality that are not subject to exchange or return — it has been approved by a Cabinet of Ministers resolution and is mandatory for all traders.
If a similar product is not available for sale, the consumer has several options:
- purchase another product with a price adjustment;
- terminate the sales contract and receive a refund;
- wait until a similar product becomes available for sale and exchange it later.
“Red colors, countdown timers, and bright banners are designed to make you buy quickly without thinking through your decision. Tip: make a shopping list in advance and pause before hitting the ‘buy’ button. Ask yourself: do I really need this? Would I buy this at full price?”
Experts recommend carefully planning purchases during Black Friday to avoid unnecessary expenses and unwanted acquisitions. A thoughtful approach will help you take advantage of discounts while preserving your rights as a consumer.
