Scientists have found that certain animal species, particularly dolphins, can identify one another using unique sound signals that serve as a kind of name. This discovery highlights the extraordinarily high level of social identity in these marine mammals.

Researcher Scott Travers, referencing findings from the Israeli Academy of Marine Research and biological experiments in natural conditions, explains that dolphins create individual whistle signals known as “signature whistles.” These are formed in childhood and remain unchanged throughout the animal’s life, acting as personal identifiers similar to human names.

As researchers have discovered, dolphins not only respond to their own signature whistle but also recognize the signals of their close companions while ignoring foreign sounds. Additionally, they are capable of mimicking the whistles of other dolphins, indicating the complexity of their communication system.

Social Memory and Cohesion in Dolphins

The use of these unique signals allows dolphins to stay connected in the three-dimensional oceanic space, where visibility is often limited. Whistles help the animals coordinate joint actions, locate one another from a distance, and maintain group cohesion even during hunting or temporary separation.

Scientists note that despite significant progress in studying dolphin communication, unresolved questions remain regarding the combination of signature and other types of signals into complex communication networks.
