Prices of Cucumbers in Ukraine Surge Due to Limited Supply

This week, Ukrainian greenhouse farms have significantly raised their wholesale prices for cucumbers. The reason for the price increase is a noticeable shortage of products in the market, caused by unfavorable weather conditions.

Limited Supply and High Demand Affect Prices

The market is experiencing heightened demand for cucumbers, which further stimulates price increases. Currently, Ukrainian greenhouse complexes are selling cucumbers for no less than 25-45 UAH per kilogram (equivalent to $0.60-1.08 per kg), which is 19% higher than at the end of last week. Market participants explain this trend by the reduction in supply—many stationary greenhouse complexes have already completed harvesting their first crop, and new batches of products are expected only in the second half of August.

“The same companies that continue to sell are practically raising prices daily, citing quite active sales rates.”

Additionally, the limited volumes of products supplied from open fields also affect cucumber prices, preventing them from decreasing in the market.

Comparison with Last Year and Forecasts

Despite the current increase, cucumber prices in Ukraine are still 24% lower than during the same period last year. Producers note that if weather conditions improve, the market situation could change quite rapidly, and the price dynamics could shift in the opposite direction.
