Poland intends to restore its leading position in the field of road freight transport between the European Union and the countries that were part of the former USSR after the war in Ukraine ends. This was stated by Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski during a meeting with international media in Warsaw.

Poland’s Role in Transport Logistics and Reconstruction
In response to a question about Poland’s role in post-war reconstruction and potential benefits, Radoslaw Sikorski emphasized that it would be inappropriate to speak of benefits regarding a country that has suffered from war. At the same time, he highlighted road freight transport as one of the key sectors in which Poland would like to establish its leadership. According to him, Polish drivers already carry about two-thirds of freight transport between Western Europe and the countries of the former USSR, which is attributed, among other things, to language advantages and the willingness of Polish companies to work in this direction.
“I hope that in the case of Ukraine, we will see a repetition of our success as a transport hub and in the field of long-distance freight transport. If I remember correctly, about two-thirds of road freight transport between Western Europe and the former USSR is carried out by Polish drivers. There are important reasons for this. The main one is the language and the fact that our companies and workers are not afraid to go there,” said the Polish minister.
Ukraine’s Potential for Economic Growth
Radoslaw Sikorski emphasized that due to proximity, shared history, and a significant Ukrainian diaspora, Poland can become a key partner for Ukraine in the reconstruction process. He expects that Poland will work directly on-site and will be able to take advantage of the economic upturn after the end of hostilities.
The minister also noted a number of natural and structural advantages of Ukraine, including fertile soils, affordable energy from nuclear power plants, a strong information technology sector, and a new defense industry. In his opinion, harmonizing business regulations with European standards will stimulate a significant influx of private investment into Ukraine.
It is worth noting that in May 2025, the customs point “Dorohusk-Yagodyn” was blocked by Polish carriers during a protest. Earlier, in 2024, Polish farmers also organized large-scale strikes, blocking borders with Ukraine and opposing the import of Ukrainian products, as well as the introduction of new environmental requirements under the European “green deal” policy.
